Our History
Christchurch Live Steamers was founded in January 2000, beginning with just 12 members and 560 metres of track on land shared with the Steam Preservation Society (Steam Scene) at McLeans Island.
Over the following decade the club grew steadily — in both membership and infrastructure. Today we have over 35 members, a 1 km mainline and 800 m of sidings, making it one of the finest 7¼" gauge layouts in New Zealand.
We are a proud member club of MEANZ (Model Engineering Association of New Zealand), and operate to their standards for safety, track specifications, and driver licensing.

Our Track & Grounds
Track Layout
1 km of mainline track plus 800 m of sidings. Tightest radius 20 m, built to the MEANZ British Narrow-Gauge standard.
The Grounds
Set within the Steam Scene property, our site features a mix of native forest and open grassland — perfect for a family day out.
Our track shares the Steam Scene property at McLeans Island — a beautiful setting of forest and grassland on the banks of the Waimakariri River. There is plenty of shade to relax under, open grass areas for the kids to run around, and BBQ tables available for your use.
Whether you're visiting as a family for a ride on the trains, celebrating a birthday, or organising a company or Christmas party, the grounds provide a wonderful backdrop for a memorable day.
Visiting Us
We open to the public on the 1st and 3rd Sunday of each month, from 10:30am to 2:30pm. Rides start from $2 per ride, with concession tickets available — $10 for 6 rides or $20 for 12 rides. Cash only — Eftpos is not available.
Special events — including night runs and our annual Steam Extravaganza — are held throughout the year. Check the events calendar for upcoming dates, and our Facebook page for weather-related cancellations on the day.
New Members Welcome
